Per-pallet billing is predictable and favors full, tall pallets — you pay the same whether the pallet is loaded to 48″ or 72″. If your pallets are dense and uniform, this is usually the cheaper structure.
Per-cubic-foot billing favors small, slow-moving, or irregular inventory. You pay only for the volume you occupy, which is why fulfillment-focused 3PLs use it for bin and shelf storage of ecommerce SKUs.
Watch for minimums. Many providers pair cubic-foot rates with monthly minimums or bin fees, and pallet rates with long-term storage surcharges after 6–12 months. The billing method is only half the story — ask for the full rate card.
